Marie V. Duffy Principal’s Welcome
Welcome to the Marie V. Duffy Elementary School and the 2022-23 school year! We are a community coming together to prepare our children to thrive in this dynamic world. Our goals are to further the academic achievement of all of our students by implementing rigorous programs and activities through advanced technology, and to create innovative, self-directed learners.
The educational environment has changed in key areas over the last few years due to the pandemic. Surprisingly, this dynamic environment has created many positive outcomes. We have a fresh appreciation of the home-school connection. All K-5 students are now routinely assigned a Chromebook. Our youngest learners have touch screens. Students understand computers are a valuable tool that can support learning and communication. Teachers continue to incorporate new technology-based pedagogy they developed during the beginning of the pandemic into their lessons.
The result of responding to the many frequently morphing federal and state health guidelines over the last few years is a safer, healthier environment. The ventilation system has been updated, hand washing/ sanitizing has been greatly increased and improved, as well as many other safety practices have been reviewed and updated.
The social emotional state of our students is supported through daily class meetings, our guidance counselor, and a growing THRIVE therapeutic program. THRIVE serves to create a safe, onsite support system that delivers actionable plans to improve mental wellness for staff and students alike. We also have student-centered programs run by teachers including Duffy Drop In and Duffy Force, our student team that works with our staff team to build a positive school culture. Duffy Force also provides our upper grade students with leadership opportunities. We strive to create a positive, open and productive environment of respect and resilience that empowers students.
The academic needs of our diverse student body are met through strong instructional practices, extensive intervention services, and inclusion classes on every grade level. This year we are able to expand our PUGs (Project Upgrade) gifted and talented program as well. The Duffy staff continues to participate in individualized and district-provided professional development. Teachers work closely together in PLCs, Professional Learning Communities, to collaboratively and consistently improve instruction.
Our parent liaison, Leticia Marquez, is a daily support and connection to the school for parents. She not only is privy to all the latest information on happenings in the school, but she also hosts parent workshops and is here to provide parents with hands-on support, including with the Parent Portal and messenger systems.
We are stronger and more focused by what we have overcome and know this is going to be an amazing school year!
