The Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School is an enterprise driven by its partnership with the community; the partnership is founded on and sustained by a shared vision of, and common value for, a proactive, affective, well-defined educational environment for all middle school students in the district of the Borough of Wharton. This alliance, grounded in a complete commitment toward these ends, is the engine which drives every program and endeavor of the middle school. 

The Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School offers a full range of educational services to two-hundred-fifty students in its sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes. The foundation for these services is a traditional program of education in the core academic areas including, but not limited to, Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Physical and Health Education. Block scheduling provides an opportunity for ninety minutes of instruction on a daily basis in the Language Arts program, and four out of five days a week in the Mathematics program. Our science department offers every student a ninety-minute lab at least once a week, in a fully equipped lab setting. Our strategic plan for continued improvement includes teacher based study groups for improved instructional strategies; curricula refinement to enhance program effectiveness; continual assessment of programs which support our curricula.

Virtually all academic areas offer students support in the form of alternative programs designed to meet specific learning needs. A variety of school service departments work to develop individual educational programming for students with special needs, as well as the establishment of standards for their success. Rounding out this package of core academic programs is a broad and engaging variety of advanced, topical fields of study. These include world languages, visual and performing arts (both choral and instrumental), and drama.

The middle school continues to offer and refine a holistic program for the emotional and social development of all students as individual citizens. Toward those ends, a wide and eclectic repertoire of extra and co curricular opportunities are fully funded, staffed, and developed. These include but are not limited to:

·         Clubs in journalism and graphic publishing
·         Computer and technology skills
·         Organized opportunities for interscholastic athletic competition (cross country, basketball, baseball, softball)
·         Social events for the establishment of positive peer relations and self-esteem
·         Exercises in student government and social activism.

Recognizing and appreciating the rich ethnic diversity of its school community, the Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School facilitates access to these opportunities by students of all cultures and languages. It brings to bear extended programs in English as a Second Language, and Bilingual Educational programming.

Our school is committed to the healthy, wholesome development of well-rounded, self-actualized, civic-minded young adults. This is the over-arching goal of the Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School : to be a bridge for success between the school and the community
